Abbey Lee is good at making a small part register without much dialogue. We would like more of the conversational actor in Horizon, where Kevin Costner’s restraint gives her room to speak.
Fi1m perspective
Kevin Costner sits on a horse and keeps his sentences short; Abbey Lee does the talking. As Marigold in Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 (2024), she has a quiet partner in Costner’s Hayes Ellison, and the film steadies when it gives them time together. That contrast is worth noticing in an actor so often cast for physical intensity. We would like to see her given that much room to talk more often.
Her first film role was The Dag in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), which makes good use of her ability to register without much speech. We were thrilled by the desert chase because Miller lets us follow what is happening at speed. It is a film we recommend readily, while wishing several supporting characters had received more attention. The Dag gives a useful early indication of her strengths, though we would want a larger part before drawing firm conclusions.
The Neon Demon (2016) drew more directly on her modelling experience, casting her as Sarah in a stylised horror film. Knowledge of the fashion industry gave her something concrete to bring to a role in it. The broader pattern has been genre films and characters with a troubled or vulnerable side, rather than ordinary people in everyday situations. Recurring television parts followed, including Christina Braithwhite in Lovecraft Country (2020) and Anna in the crime drama Black Rabbit (2025).
We would approach Black Rabbit with modest expectations, despite convincing performances from Jude Law and Jason Bateman as brothers. Its repetitive plotting makes eight episodes feel overextended. Horizon is harder to recommend, spreading four unfinished stories across three hours, even if Lee benefits from Costner’s restraint. Start with Fury Road; we would not ask anyone to sit through all of Horizon for Lee alone.
