Bodil Jørgensen makes vulnerability feel ordinary, using a soft voice and little apparent effort. Her work stretches from psychological drama to black comedy, and we value the tenderness she can bring to material that does not always deserve it.
Fi1m perspective
In the commune scenes of The Idiots (1998), Bodil Jørgensen gives the group's tenderness a credibility its public provocations lack. Her Karen can be vulnerable without making her feelings an endorsement of the group's beliefs. We were moved by those quieter exchanges because she made us care about people whose antics had worn us down. She is the strongest reason to take Lars von Trier's film seriously, though not enough to make us recommend it.
Her film breakthrough followed work in experimental theatre, and the later parts have taken her into black comedy as well as drama. She plays Tina in Anders Thomas Jensen's black comedy The Green Butchers (2003), and Gudrun Fiil in Hvidstengruppen (2012). Jørgensen's particular skill is to let humour and distress sit close together without signalling that she has changed how she is acting. Her soft, gentle voice helps: a character need not raise it to make us attend.
The television work keeps that comic ability in view. As Molly Andersen in Badehotellet (2013–2024), she has a long-running place in popular Danish drama; the satire of Rytteriet makes use of her timing and gift for recognisable characters. We should not let Karen's fragility obscure the skill involved in making a comic character stick. Riget: Exodus (2022), in which she plays Karen Svensson, also reunites her with von Trier.
Jørgensen's usefulness to von Trier is clear in The Idiots: Karen's feelings remain hers, rather than simply proving what the commune claims about freedom. The trouble is that his repeated public provocations do not become more interesting because she has made the private exchanges credible. Once she has given us someone worth attending to, we feel the time spent on those antics more keenly. Approach the film for her only if that is a frustration worth accepting.
