Brad Garrett's deep voice can make a character intimidating or faintly defeated. We value him most in company, where his timing and gift for playing the overlooked man make him a dependable supporting actor.
Fi1m perspective
In Elio (2025), Brad Garrett gives Lord Grigon the heavy voice expected of an armoured warlord. His son Glordon, voiced by Remy Edgerly, is a soft pink grub with no arms. Garrett is useful casting here because he supplies the intimidating father without needing the film to explain him. We find the film hurried and predictable, but its father-and-son story gives the supporting cast the strongest material.
Everybody Loves Raymond (1996–2005) gave him his breakthrough as Robert Barone, opposite Ray Romano. His height and low, weary delivery suit a brother who feels overlooked. A starring role followed in 'Til Death (2006–2010), while animation became a substantial second line of work. We prefer him with an ensemble, where that imposing size can seem of little help to the man doing the complaining.
The voice work was already running alongside the sitcoms: Garrett played Bloat in Andrew Stanton's Finding Nemo (2003), before Auguste Gusteau in Ratatouille (2007). We rate Finding Nemo highly for its funny, moving treatment of a father's fear, with some reservations about how insistently it delivers the parenting advice. Garrett belongs to an excellent voice cast, though we would not pretend this is a film built around him. That is useful context for Elio, where the supporting players again do much of the emotional work.
In Elio, the familiar warlord outline is less interesting than the contrast with Glordon, who has no wish to fight. We cared about this father and son because Glordon's gentleness makes Grigon's aggression feel like a problem inside a family. Garrett cannot make the busy middle less familiar, but the part gives his weighty delivery a purpose beyond announcing a threat. Start with Finding Nemo for the stronger film; choose Elio if the stern father and unwilling fighter are what interest you.
