Fi1m perspective

Bradley Cooper plays men who cannot sit still, and he is best when a director makes him. Behind the camera he has made one fine musical romance and two films about marriage that know the husband a good deal better than the wife.

Watch his hands. In Maestro (2023) they are never still; in Silver Linings Playbook (2012) Pat Solatano talks as though a conversation is something he has to win before he is allowed to rest. Bradley Cooper's men are restless. They perform for whoever is watching, and it is usually their own family. He does not ask us to like it. Pat is exhausting from his first scene, and we cared about him anyway, which is the hardest thing an actor in a romantic comedy can pull off.

He came up through television, with a run on Alias (2001–06), then supporting comedy parts, then The Hangover (2009), which made him a leading man. The turn came with David O. Russell, who has directed him three times and who saw that the speed could be pointed at something painful. Silver Linings Playbook was the first of those films, American Hustle (2013) the second. The same year, in The Place Beyond the Pines, he played a policeman ambitious and frightened at once, and was good in a section of the film that had to hurry. American Sniper (2014), for Clint Eastwood, followed.

Then he started directing himself. A Star Is Born (2018) is still the best of it. He believes in the romance enough to make an old story work again, makes Jackson Maine good company without softening the drinking, and with Matthew Libatique brings the cameras close enough that we can watch two people working out a song. Maestro is a more careful reconstruction, the voice dropped and slowed, the laugh arriving a beat before the joke, and it is where the habit turns against him. We admired the accuracy and never stopped noticing it. The director films the actor from a fond distance, and Carey Mulligan, given less fuss, takes the film. Then comes the Mahler in the cathedral, one long take, hair plastered down, the orchestra loud enough to shake the seat. It got us. We sat forward and forgot we were watching an actor, for the first time in two hours, because he had finally let the music run and stopped performing over it.

Is This Thing On? (2025) takes the lesson. Cooper plays the friend, gives the film to Will Arnett, and sits still in a room with his actors. It is a relief after Maestro, though the script is so kind that nobody behaves badly for long, and the wife is known mostly by inference. Both his marriage films have that problem.

The best acting he has done is in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), as a raccoon with a past, and we never see his face. We had not expected a Marvel film to upset us and it did, because Cooper and Sean Gunn, sharing the part, play the memory of a cage without pity. A man who prepares as hard as he does, learning to conduct, remaking his voice, is at his best when we cannot see any of it. Start with A Star Is Born, then the raccoon. Save the biopics for a patient evening.
