Brendan Fraser's size and hesitant reactions make an unusually convincing combination, in adventure comedy as much as quieter drama. We rate him most highly when he listens; his least persuasive performances tend to be the loudest.
Fi1m perspective
In The Mummy (1999), Brendan Fraser's Rick O'Connell sees something alarming and takes a moment to decide whether to run or hit it. That pause is often funnier than the script. He makes Rick brave without making him clever, and lets us see that Rick knows the difference. Stephen Sommers helps by keeping him with Rachel Weisz and John Hannah in the frame, where his reactions are part of the company's pleasure.
The comedy and the drama were both there in his breakthrough films, Encino Man and School Ties (both 1992). Bill Condon's Gods and Monsters (1998) is where we would send anyone who thinks the dramatic actor arrived much later. As gardener Clayton Boone, he gives Ian McKellen's James Whale someone with a life beyond listening to his recollections. The script explains too much, but Fraser makes the friendship feel like two people choosing to spend time together.
Later supporting parts found a less reassuring use for his softness. In Steven Soderbergh's No Sudden Move (2021), his middleman Doug Jones is heavy, soft-spoken and the most dangerous man in the first act. He needs no raised voice to establish that. In Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), his lawyer is too loud for the film around him. We rate Scorsese's film highly, but Fraser's delivery belongs in a broader one.
In Hikari's Rental Family (2025), that restraint returns. His Phillip Vanderploeg, an American actor taking hired family roles in Tokyo, ducks through doorways and waits while a client cries. We were moved by his early scene with Shannon Mahina Gorman, because he keeps his hands in his lap as though waiting for permission to care. It is quieter, and better, work than his performance in The Whale (2022).
Yet Rental Family also shows how easily filmmakers can mistake his gentleness for a reason to avoid difficult questions. Jon Thor Birgisson and Alex Somers keep adding hummed voices and strings after his face has already made the feeling clear. His performance deserves attention, but the film stays too soft to earn our recommendation. Start with Gods and Monsters, and watch what Fraser does while McKellen is talking.
