Fi1m perspective

Carla Gallo has spent thirty years in the supporting cast, mostly in comedy, mostly as the fast-talking friend. She is at her best when a show gives her a corner to warm, as Carnivàle did, and least visible when it gives her nothing to do.

In Carnivàle (2003) Carla Gallo plays Libby Dreifuss, who works the strip tent with her mother, Rita Sue, and between them the two women supply most of the warmth that dusty, unhurried show allows itself. Everyone else in the carnival is hiding something or dying of something; Libby is getting on with the evening's work. We were glad, more than once, when the camera left the preachers and the prophecies and wandered back to the tent, because hers was the one face that did not seem to be waiting for the end of the world. It is a small part and she does not try to make it larger.

That has been the shape of the career. She made her debut in Spanking the Monkey (1994) while still a student, found her way into Judd Apatow's circle with Undeclared (2001), as Lizzie Exley, and has appeared in five of his productions since, usually briefly and usually as the odd one at the edge of the frame. The Superbad (2007) appearance is short and rude and is the sort of thing that could have fixed her for good as the actress who does the cameo. It did not, quite. Nine years as Daisy Wick, the forensic intern on Bones (2008–2017) who acts before she thinks, gave her the longest run she has had and a character built to her speed.

The gift is timing. She can land a joke and then let the scene settle, so the laugh does not cost the drama anything, and she has a reputation for improvising well when the page runs out. The limit is that she needs a scene with a place already made for her in it. In Platonic (2023), as Katie, she is a series regular in a show that belongs entirely to Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen, and we found the supporting characters could not compete for attention; she is one of the characters we meant. She does not push. Given nothing, she takes nothing.

If you want to see what she can do, Carnivàle is the place, and it rewards the patience it asks for. The Apatow films will give you a minute of her and Bones will give you years. Neither is the part she deserves, and somebody could still write it.
