Fi1m perspective

Seth Rogen has spent twenty-five years playing the amiable slob who is, on closer inspection, the problem, and getting his laughs by looking put-upon about it. Lately he has started to notice, and The Studio and The Invite are the better for it.

Watch Seth Rogen being told off. The head goes down, the shoulders come up, the voice drops into a grumble, and he looks like the most wronged man alive. Then you remember what he has just done. It is the same trick in Neighbors (2014), where Mac Radner is at war with the fraternity next door, and in The Invite (2026), where Joe has stopped listening to his wife. He gets his laughs by looking put-upon while being, plainly, the problem.

The habit was there in Freaks and Geeks (1999), his first job, and Judd Apatow kept him on through The 40 Year-Old Virgin (2005) and Knocked Up (2007). The same year he and Evan Goldberg, his writing partner since they were teenagers, put their own school days on screen in Superbad (2007), a filthy, funny film about two boys who talk about sex so they need not talk about being separated. Rogen has said "We always try to write what we know from personal experiences", and the pattern holds: Pineapple Express (2008) for their twenties, This Is the End (2013) for their thirties, and The Studio (2025), a Hollywood farce, for their years producing through Point Grey Pictures.

The Studio is the best case for him as a maker rather than a face. Adam Newport-Berra shoots the office in long takes that keep Matt Remick in the frame, and Rogen and Goldberg let each mistake keep developing instead of hiding it behind a reaction cut. We laughed, then felt worn out by the embarrassment, because the camera would not give him or us a breather. The programme is too fond of the industry it is mocking to be as cruel as it first looks.

The weaknesses are the ones his fans forgive and the rest of us notice. When he is allowed to riff, scenes run a full minute past the last funny line; Neighbors has several, and Zene Baker's cutting cannot rescue them. His voice work is a dependable growl and not much else: Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) is Seth Rogen with more hair, and Pumbaa in Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) passes without comment.

Then Olivia Wilde sat him down opposite Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz and he was the best thing in the film. Joe in The Invite is tired, self-involved and grumpy, and it is the first time we have watched one of Rogen's slobs and believed he had a mortgage and a bad back. He is good, too, opposite Rose Byrne in Neighbors and Platonic (2023), where they insult each other with the ease of an old routine. Seek out whoever refuses to let him be the nice one: Wilde, Byrne, Goldberg with a long lens. Left alone, he is amiable, and amiable is not enough.
