Fi1m perspective

Clark Gregg makes official competence quietly funny. His Agent Coulson gives larger-than-life heroes someone recognisably ordinary to deal with, and we rate that steadiness, even if one role has come to account for too much of his screen reputation.

Clark Gregg lets the hero make the fuss. As Agent Coulson in Iron Man (2008), he plays the official with work to do, bringing a useful steadiness to Robert Downey Jr.’s funny, abrasive lead. We warmed to him because his understated humour made dealing with a superhero feel like another part of the working day. He gives us someone recognisably ordinary to watch without turning that ordinariness into an elaborate joke. Jon Favreau’s attention to actors pays off here: the supporting player has something to contribute without competing for the film.

Before Coulson, there were supporting film roles and work with David Mamet on stage and screen. Agents, officers and executives suit an actor who can suggest that he knows what he is doing without asking for applause. The danger with such competence is that it can make a performance easy to overlook. In A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), he plays Supernerd, a supporting credit in a film we value chiefly for Haley Joel Osment’s painfully convincing manufactured child.

Iron Man made Coulson his signature role; The Avengers (2012) expanded it, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–2020) put him at the centre of a television programme for seven seasons. That move from supporting player to lead is the substantial turn in his acting career. It gave his unshowy manner a much longer test than the early film appearances could provide. It also left much of his screen reputation attached to one character, so we would be cautious about grand claims for his acting on that evidence alone.

There are other places to look, including Vance in (500) Days of Summer (2009) and Choke (2008), which he wrote, directed and acted in. He has not confined himself to the sort of part that made him recognisable. What we value most remains his ability to be funny without making everyone else stop for the joke. Start with Iron Man, and spare some attention for the man who has come to get on with his job.
