Courteney Cox makes impatience funny and gives Gale Weathers an enjoyably selfish edge. We value her timing with other actors, but Scream 7 asks affection for a familiar performer to make up for too much poor writing.
Fi1m perspective
In Scream 7 (2026), Courteney Cox arrives as Gale Weathers and the film briefly becomes more engaging. Her scenes with Neve Campbell benefit from thirty years of playing these characters together, and are better played than those around them. We were glad to see her, then disappointed to notice how much of our pleasure came from recognition rather than anything Kevin Williamson had written. Cox is worth watching in a weak sequel, but that is a modest return for a character with this much history.
Friends (1994–2004) made her familiar as Monica Geller, the exacting chef in an ensemble built for comedy. The pleasure of that part lies in how seriously Monica takes getting things right, and Cox has the timing to make that insistence funny. Gale, the ambitious tabloid reporter introduced in Scream (1996), gave the sweetness of her early screen image a useful corrective. Here was someone prepared to be ruthless to get what she wanted. It was a productive change of emphasis, giving Cox permission to be less agreeable.
Cox had to persuade Wes Craven that she could play Gale, which tells us how firmly the sweeter image had stuck. Craven's Scream, written by Kevin Williamson, gives that change somewhere useful to go: the humour is sharp, but the danger still matters. The cast earns our concern rather than relying on our knowledge of horror films to keep us interested. There are passages where Williamson spends too long explaining the rules before allowing the fright to happen. We still recommend it readily, because its actors have characters to play as well as jokes to deliver.
After Friends, Cougar Town (2009–2015) gave her another sitcom lead as Jules Cobb, along with episodes to direct. That continued emphasis on ensemble comedy makes sense for an actor whose timing is one of her clearest strengths. We would like to see more roles that ask something of her beyond returning as someone we already know, especially when the welcome can hide how little the part offers. Start with Scream for Gale; affection for Cox is not sufficient reason to follow her through every sequel.
