Craig Fairbrass has made a career of playing hardmen, but Prime Suspect gives us a better reason to pay attention: he can make a man deciding whom to obey worth watching.
Fi1m perspective
In the incident room in Prime Suspect (1991), Craig Fairbrass's DI Frank Burkin is working out which side is safer. Helen Mirren's Tennison asks a question, and the men look to Tom Bell's Otley to see whether they should answer. Alongside Jack Ellis, Fairbrass helps make this resistance feel like ordinary workplace behaviour, which is what makes it so unpleasant. We were angry within half an hour, because the men's hesitation tells Tennison how little her authority counts with them. Fairbrass does not need a speech explaining Burkin's loyalties; the business of choosing them is enough.
The Hollywood move brought Cliffhanger (1993), with Fairbrass as Delmar alongside Sylvester Stallone. Renny Harlin makes the mountain danger convincing enough to compensate for some poor dialogue, though the noise can wear us down. We recommend it for the climbing and the forceful action, with Stallone providing a dependable centre. For a sense of why Fairbrass himself is worth watching, we would still put the incident-room scenes first.
After the Hollywood supporting work came EastEnders (1999–2001), where he played Dan Sullivan, and then the British crime films that became his regular employment. Rise of the Footsoldier (2007) gave him Pat Tate, a part he would return to across a long-running series. The franchise, whose recurring directors include Nick Nevern, has kept him firmly associated with imposing, violent men. That familiarity is also the limitation: when a casting decision tells us what to expect before the actor has spoken, the script needs to give him something beyond another opportunity to be threatening.
He has put the bargain plainly: “Being typecast is better than being not cast.” We would not begrudge him the work, but a dependable supply of hardmen is not enough to make us recommend a film. What interests us in Burkin is watching a man decide where obedience will serve him best. Start with Prime Suspect, and watch the inspectors when Tennison asks a question.
