Fi1m perspective

Cynda Williams can make a dangerous character worth worrying about without asking us to excuse her. Her performance in One False Move is a substantial reason we recommend the film, bringing vulnerability and toughness to a thriller that needs both.

In One False Move (1992), Cynda Williams makes the criminal trio worth watching for more than the threat of violence. As Fantasia, alongside Billy Bob Thornton’s Ray Malcolm and Michael Beach’s Pluto, she gives the pursuit someone to worry about. We were moved by her because the vulnerability she brings to Fantasia does not make the character seem harmless. There is toughness here too, and Williams does not force us to choose between the two. She is a substantial part of what makes the thriller so good.

Her screen debut in Spike Lee’s Mo' Better Blues (1990), playing Clarke Bentancourt, also made use of her singing. The leading role for Carl Franklin in One False Move followed, establishing how well she could work with a conflicted character. Her subsequent career stayed largely in independent films and supporting parts, with television work including D'orothea Wilson in Tales of the City (1993) and Vivian Dandridge in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999). That smaller profile should not be mistaken for a limitation in the acting.

Franklin’s use of a small-town lawman and approaching criminals gives One False Move a shape familiar from Westerns as well as noir. That familiarity makes Williams particularly important: the audience can anticipate danger, so the interest has to lie in the people. Her soft-spoken delivery rewards the time Franklin allows them. He also makes racial and sexual inequality matter to how we judge those people, without giving them speeches to explain it. Williams helps prevent an efficient crime plot from becoming merely mechanical.

The reservation is Franklin’s occasional insistence on menace, especially in an opening whose brutality is overdone. Williams and Paxton supply enough human detail to justify our strong recommendation, but the warning about that opening matters. Start with One False Move for Williams; do not choose it for an undemanding evening.
