Fi1m perspective

Dwight Yoakam gives screen bullies a nasal drawl and a forceful presence. We rate him most when a director uses that abrasiveness to unsettle an ensemble, as Billy Bob Thornton does in Sling Blade.

In Sling Blade (1996), Dwight Yoakam's Doyle Hargraves changes the pace of the people around him. Billy Bob Thornton's drama takes its time, sometimes too much of it, but Yoakam brings a forcefulness that makes that patience less comfortable. We felt a jolt of unease at Doyle's abrasiveness, because it disturbs the dark humour without making it disappear. The nasal drawl helps: the voice is distinctive, but the pressure he puts on the ensemble matters more. Thornton gives him something worth interrupting, which is why the performance amounts to more than an unpleasant man being unpleasant.

His first screen role was in Red Rock West (1993), and Sling Blade was the breakthrough, establishing a line in men who are difficult to trust and harder to tolerate. The danger with such casting is that a performer can become a quick way of announcing trouble rather than a character worth watching. Yoakam's strength is his control: the intensity is useful even when the part offers little beyond threat. Panic Room (2002), in which he plays Raoul, makes that limitation clear without making the casting a mistake. It is a narrow assignment, and there is value in doing it properly.

He also wrote and directed South of Heaven, West of Hell (2001), playing Valentine Casey, though supporting roles have remained the main business of his screen career. In Steven Soderbergh's Logan Lucky (2017), he plays Warden Burns in a loose, affectionate heist comedy. The film is worth an evening for its humour and fondness for its people, though its closing stretch goes on too long. Daniel Craig is its chief attraction.

The limitation is in the parts as much as the acting: repeated bullies and villains do not give us much evidence of what he might do with someone less abrasive. Nor does every effective supporting turn require a promotion to leading man. We would rather see him given a well-written person than merely more scenes. Start with Sling Blade, where Thornton gives that forcefulness people to push against and enough dark humour to keep the drama from becoming a sermon.
