Fi1m perspective

Enno Trebs plays men the other characters have written off, and lets us write them off too before the film corrects us. It is a quiet, patient trick, best seen in Christian Petzold's Afire, and the parts have been smaller than the talent.

Devid, the lifeguard in Afire (2023), arrives at the summer house as a man the film's novelist has already decided about. Leon looks at him and files him under fool, and Trebs goes along with the filing for exactly as long as the film needs him to. Then the film turns him round, and he is nothing of the kind. We felt slightly caught out, because we had been agreeing with Leon, and the performance had let us; that is the whole of the trick, and it is done without a raised voice.

He has been at this since he was a boy. His first part was Georg in Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon (2009), with his siblings in the same cast, and two more followed in his teens: Philipp in We Are Young. We Are Strong. (2014), about the Rostock-Lichtenhagen riots of 1992, and Bernd in Sanctuary (2015), set in a Christian reformatory. Then he went away to train and to the stage, joining the Deutsches Theater Berlin ensemble for the 2020/21 season. The film career that came out of it belongs largely to Christian Petzold, who has used him in three films from Undine (2020) onwards, Afire among them and Miroirs No. 3 (2025) the most recent.

What he brings is restraint. He is an actor who would rather not explain, on screen or off; he has said he is "all in favour of taking the audience seriously", and Petzold is the director who takes him at his word. In Fatherland (2026), Paweł Pawlikowski casts him and his brother Theo as Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner, and the pairing is a good idea the film has no time for; like most of that picture's gallery of people who stayed and managed, they are on and off before they can become a relationship. That is the recurring limit of the career so far. The performances are precise and unshowy, and they have mostly been asked to be brief.

The reservation is not ours alone; it is the only one anybody seems to have. Nobody writes that he is mannered or miscast. They write that he was a child actor and then a supporting player for a long time. That is changing, with leading roles in 2025 and 2026, Miroirs No. 3 and the Cologne music film Köln 75 (2025) among them, alongside theatre work he has not given up. We would like to see what he does when a film hands him the first hour rather than a scene in the third act, and whether the stillness holds when there is nobody else on screen to be underestimated by.
