Biography

Ezio Frigerio (also credited as Elvezio Frigerio) was an Italian production designer, art director and costume designer. Born on 16 July 1930 in Erba, Lombardy, he studied architecture before beginning his career designing costumes for plays directed by Giorgio Strehler at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan during the 1955–56 season. He died on 2 February 2022 in Lecco, Lombardy.

Frigerio worked extensively in film. He served as production designer on Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction. His other film credits include art direction on 1900 (1976) and production design on Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963), The Horseman on the Roof (1995) and The Ogre (1996).

He maintained a long collaboration with Strehler on theatre and opera productions, and frequently worked with costume designer Franca Squarciapino, his wife. Frigerio also designed for opera houses including La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera, and for ballet productions with Rudolf Nureyev.
