Born in London in 1902, he began working in film laboratories at Gaumont-British as a teenager and became a chief cameraman by the late 1920s. He served as a captain in the British Army's Kinematograph Unit during the Second World War.

Young was best known for his long collaboration with director David Lean. He shot Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965) and Ryan's Daughter (1970), winning the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for each. Other notable credits include Ivanhoe (1952), Lust for Life (1956), You Only Live Twice (1967), Battle of Britain (1969) and Nicholas and Alexandra (1971).
