Fi1m perspective

Gabrielle Union gives sharp replies the confidence of someone who expects to be listened to. We rate her comic assurance, though the headstrong women she is often asked to play can feel too familiar.

Gabrielle Union often gets the sharp reply, and delivers it as though an argument has already been settled. As Isis, the rival cheer squad captain in Bring It On (2000), she makes a supporting opponent count. That firmness is one of her comic strengths. It also has limits: Union has since questioned how much she restrained herself in the part.

Her earlier appearance as Chastity in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) places her in a school romance worth recommending, though Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger provide its central warmth. We like the courtship's humour and the willingness to leave some bad temper in the characters. The plotting is patchy and the party scenes drag, but neither spoils the evening. For anyone following Union's work, this is a worthwhile early appearance, provided they are not expecting her to lead the film.

Deliver Us from Eva (2003) gave her a leading role suited to her caustic delivery, while Bad Boys II (2003) cast her as Syd. Michael Bay's sequel is a much poorer reason to spend an evening with her. We were worn down by the repetitive destruction; an effective highway chase cannot justify 146 minutes. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence manage a few decent jokes, but the film keeps returning to destruction when it has already exhausted our interest. Union's presence is no reason to overlook that failure.

The lead in Being Mary Jane (2013–2019) gave her a sustained television role, and The Inspection (2022) brought a harsher dramatic part as Inez, a homophobic mother. Those choices offer more to consider than another version of the familiar headstrong woman. Yet the comic timing was already a strength in Deliver Us from Eva, and there is no need to dismiss that work because later parts are more serious. For a first encounter, we would still choose Bring It On.
