Ginnifer Goodwin makes optimism stubborn enough to irritate another character, which is why we like her as Judy Hopps. She is less well served by parts that ask her to be sweet and stop there.
Fi1m perspective
In Zootopia 2 (2025), Judy Hopps rushes towards the problem while Nick Wilde holds back, and Ginnifer Goodwin makes the difference between them matter. Her optimism has enough stubbornness in it to make sharing a job difficult. We warmed to Judy because Goodwin lets her determination become a nuisance without making it false. Jason Bateman's weary timing gives her someone to annoy. Directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush get good work from the pair by allowing them to remain awkward together.
Walk the Line (2005) shows what happens when there is less room for her. James Mangold's film gives Goodwin's Vivian Cash too little attention, while Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon have the space to make the central courtship convincing. We recommend the film for them, but it is a poor place to discover what Goodwin can do. The screenplay is so occupied with making the romance work that Vivian can feel like an interruption. That is a limit imposed by the writing, and we would not mistake it for a limit in the actor.
Television gave her more sustained opportunities, as Margene Heffman in Big Love (2006–2011) and Snow White/Mary Margaret in Once Upon a Time (2011–2018). Those long-running parts sit alongside the romantic-comedy work, including Gigi in He's Just Not That Into You (2009). The recurring casting is easy to see: energetic, hopeful women, usually with sweetness expected of them. Her Gigi has enough resilience to make that sweetness credible. The reservation is how rarely she gets to play someone unkind.
Voicing Judy in Zootopia (2016) put her enthusiasm and determination to good use. In the sequel, Bush's script sends Judy and Nick to Dr. Fuzzby to discuss their inability to work comfortably together. Goodwin's choice to make Judy stubborn gives that scene a reason to exist beyond the joke of two animals receiving workplace advice. There is too much mystery piled around the pair, but their disagreements are worth returning to. Try the sequel if the first film worked for you; do not expect the plot to have become tidier.
