Fi1m perspective

Bateman does less than anyone else in the scene and lets the pause carry it: the straight man who would like some credit for staying civil. That works in comedy and in crime, and it fails only when the scripts leave him nothing to add up.

Watch Michael Bluth take a breath before he answers his mother. Nothing much happens on his face; the pause is the joke, and it says that Michael would like some credit for remaining civil. Bateman has been refining that pause for more than twenty years. In Ozark (2017) it becomes Marty Byrde negotiating with killers in the tone of a man querying an invoice. He rarely raises his voice, because his characters are always adding something up.

He was a child actor in the early 1980s, on Little House on the Prairie and then The Hogan Family, where he was directing episodes at eighteen. The 1990s went quiet. Arrested Development (2003) brought him back as the one Bluth we could stand next to, and supporting film parts followed: Mark Loring in Juno (2007), easier in manner than Jennifer Garner’s Vanessa; Nick Wilde in Zootopia (2016) and Zootopia 2 (2025), with a weary timing he learnt on television; Rob Strasser in Air (2023), tired and decent, worried about his job and a daughter he sees at weekends. Then Ozark, where he took the lead, directed as well, and stayed four seasons.

The directing is the part most people miss. His Ozark episodes are the most controlled of the run: long, still shots of people deciding whether to lie. He opens The Outsider (2020) with an arrest in daylight, outside a ballpark, with no music, and it is more shocking for the quiet. Igor Martinović shoots the town in overcast greens, and the woods where the body is found are so ordinary that we were horrified, more than the pictures alone should allow. Bateman has said of his roles, “In a drama, I’m not the person with a knife, I’m the person getting chased. In a comedy, I’m not the person farting, I’m the person who smelled it.” He directs the same way. The camera stays with whoever has to live with what has just happened.

The stillness has a cost. When the writing thins there is not much underneath it, and the complaint that he plays the same tired man in the same sort of shirt is not wrong. Black Rabbit (2025), which he also directed, gives him Vince Friedken, a likeable disaster opposite Jude Law, and the pair carry eight episodes the scripts have not earned. We wanted Law’s Jake to stop making allowances for Vince, and were surprised by how much we cared whether he would; that was Bateman’s charm working on us as it works on his brother. In DTF St. Louis (2026) he is the friend, and it is David Harbour who moved us.

Start with Arrested Development, then the first two seasons of Ozark, and watch the opening of The Outsider for the director rather than the actor. Since Ozark he has directed The Outsider and Black Rabbit, and we suspect that is where the next interesting work is. It will not be loud.
