Fi1m perspective

Hugh Bonneville is good at playing men whose authority does not spare them embarrassment. We value his warmth and steadiness, though the writing sometimes asks him to supply little more than a familiar, reassuring presence.

In Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025), Hugh Bonneville’s Robert Crawley can be mortified and loyal in the same sentence. With Mary facing social humiliation after her divorce, his discomfort does not cancel his loyalty. We value that ability to let a man look foolish without making his affection seem foolish too. Julian Fellowes’s script gives Michelle Dockery the weightier material, and Bonneville’s contribution cannot make this thin farewell more substantial than it is. He does, however, make Robert’s loyalty worth watching.

The familiar patriarch came after supporting film roles including Bernie in Notting Hill (1999) and John Bayley in Iris (2001). Downton Abbey (2010–2015) made him internationally recognisable, and he brought a similar decency to Henry Brown in Paddington (2014). It is easy to call this typecasting, given how often he plays well-to-do Englishmen and men in charge. The more useful question is whether the part allows him to do anything beyond seeming decent. His comic timing in Twenty Twelve (2011–2012) is a useful reminder that this manner can be funny, too.

Paddington in Peru (2024) shows what happens when the writing settles for the familiar. Bonneville’s Henry is told by his new boss that he is too cautious, then spends the film learning to take risks. Dougal Wilson’s film gives the Browns less to do, and Henry’s neatly announced lesson leaves little room for surprise. Bonneville’s dependable family-man warmth remains a virtue, but it cannot make that small thread feel less prescribed. We would rather see the script trust him with an awkward situation than explain in advance what he needs to learn.

In The Gold (2023), Neil Forsyth gives him a more useful job as DCI Brian Boyce. We warmed to Boyce because Bonneville gives the busy investigation a calm centre without slowing it down. Forsyth’s sharp dialogue helps an ensemble including Charlotte Spencer, as Nicki Jennings, keep the explanations of criminal business entertaining. Start with its first series, allowing some patience for the lectures about class.
