Fi1m perspective

Izuka Hoyle gives sensible supporting characters enough wit and feeling to keep them from becoming merely useful. We rate her comic timing, and want more parts that let her set the pace.

In Big Boys (2022), Izuka Hoyle brings precise comic timing to Corinne in Jack Rooke's university comedy. She is good at playing the grounded, no-nonsense person, a type that can become thankless when an actor is there chiefly to keep everyone else credible. Hoyle's humour makes that steadiness worth watching in its own right. We rate her most when a part gives her room to be funny rather than simply dependable.

Her early screen work includes Mary Seton in Mary Queen of Scots (2018), before Camille in Philip Barantini's Boiling Point (2021) brought a breakthrough. The French accent is convincing, although she had no prior knowledge of the language. She also gives Camille quieter moments of vulnerability, and those matter more than getting the vowels right. She returned as Camille in the television series in 2023. This is the work to choose for her dramatic side, rather than assuming that comedy tells us everything.

Big Boys is an easy recommendation, with Hoyle's timing fitting Rooke's mixture of comedy and tenderness. We warmed to its central friendship because Dylan Llewellyn and Jon Pointing make the affection between two apparently mismatched young men believable. The writing can be too anxious to reassure, and that softness sometimes costs it a joke. Hoyle is an asset within that approach, though a well-timed performance cannot make the programme less cautious.

The Outrun (2024) places her Gloria alongside Saoirse Ronan in a film carried almost entirely by its lead. Nora Fingscheidt's drama is worth seeing, despite a voiceover that explains too much and a final half-hour that repeats itself. With so much resting on Ronan, it is a poor place to start if the purpose is to find out what Hoyle can do. For a fuller look at Hoyle, follow Big Boys with Boiling Point.
