Fi1m perspective

James Frecheville is good at playing people who give little away. We value the unease his reserve brings to crime dramas and thrillers, though it sometimes leaves us waiting for a clearer sense of the character.

In Animal Kingdom (2010), James Frecheville’s Joshua ‘J’ Cody is surrounded by relatives played with far more force than he allows himself. His uncertainty makes the criminal family strange, while his lack of charm stops this introduction to their life from looking inviting. We were frustrated by his reserve at times, because we could not get a clear enough sense of what J made of them. David Michôd gets something valuable from that discomfort, but there are stretches when Ben Mendelsohn and Jacki Weaver give us more reason to watch.

That was Frecheville’s feature debut, following an open casting call, and some initially assumed he was playing a version of himself. His subsequent work includes the international supporting role of Fitz in The Drop (2014), the lead as Martin Feeney in Black '47 (2018), and Jack Nelson in Peaky Blinders (2022). Black '47 required extensive physical and linguistic preparation.

The Royal Hotel (2023) puts his guarded manner to more precise use. As Teeth, a large, shy regular at the pub, he is one of the men Kitty Green asks us to assess without giving us enough information to feel certain. Michael Latham shoots the interior in brown half-light, while Leah Popple supplies cracked tiles and a bedroom lock that offers little protection. Their work makes the place feel ordinary and unsafe. Frecheville’s shyness offers a possible reassurance, but Green does not let us settle on it.

We rate Animal Kingdom more highly as a film, despite its slackening second half; The Royal Hotel makes good use of Frecheville before losing its nerve. Neither needs him to make the company appealing, and both benefit from his reluctance to do so. Start with Michôd’s film, with some patience for its quietest member of the family.
