Jason Schwartzman is a precise comic actor whose oddness can become too familiar. We value him most when the quiet delivery has a reason: Asteroid City lets us hear shock in a voice that never rises.
Fi1m perspective
Jason Schwartzman checks his notes to see how many children are left, with the air of a presenter filling an awkward gap in the programme. As Lucky Flickerman in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), he makes indifference sound like professional competence. We laughed, then stopped because the routine made the children seem like items to be ticked off. The film loses its footing later, but his small part knows exactly what it is doing.
That comic usefulness can obscure how early he was trusted with a lead. His debut in Wes Anderson’s Rushmore (1998) began the collaboration that remains central to his work. By The Darjeeling Limited (2007), he was also co-writing with Anderson and Roman Coppola. Away from Anderson, Listen Up Philip (2014) gave him another opportunity to make an unlikeable man engaging, though the eccentricity can become a familiar expectation.
Asteroid City (2023) gives that familiarity a useful complication. His Augie Steenbeck is a bereaved photographer with a pipe, a beard and a voice that never rises; Schwartzman makes the flatness sound like shock. The scenes with Scarlett Johansson, speaking through the facing windows of their cabins as her actress rehearses, give us two people who want something from each other. Anderson’s town can feel more carefully arranged than inhabited, and the film is slow to let us close. Schwartzman gives us a reason to wait.
In Queer (2024), his dishevelled, gossipy Joe Guidry supplies most of the laughs. That does not rescue a film that eventually loses its way, but a useful supporting performance need not carry that burden. As the voice of the villain Spot in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), he puts his comic timing to work without the familiar face.
The limitation is the ease with which a film can use him as its allotted odd man. We need a reason for the level delivery, as we get with Augie’s shock and Flickerman’s indifference. Try Asteroid City for those cabin conversations, provided Anderson’s leisurely pace is not a deal-breaker.
