Fi1m perspective

Jaye Davidson gives tenderness an unusual firmness, making Dil in The Crying Game persuasive even when the plotting becomes too clever. We value that directness without needing to invent a grand career around it.

Jaye Davidson's Dil meets the guardedness of Stephen Rea's character in The Crying Game (1992) with a directness that gives their romantic scenes some needed firmness. Tenderness can easily become an instruction to pity everybody; Davidson prevents that here. We were moved by the way Dil remains self-possessed while the film invites sympathy for the people caught in its plot. Rea's vulnerability makes that firmness particularly welcome. We would prefer longer conversations and fewer plot complications.

Davidson came to Neil Jordan's film without acting experience, a fact worth remembering without making it the whole explanation for Dil. There is skill in keeping the romantic material firm when the writing encourages softer, easier feelings. The next major role was Ra, the villainous sun god in Roland Emmerich's Stargate (1994), a move from a romantic thriller into science fiction. Davidson retired from acting afterwards. We have little basis for guessing what another decade of acting would have produced.

Jordan gets the most from Davidson when he lets conversation do the work. Dil's directness gives Rea's guardedness something to respond to, and the exchanges remain interesting without extra help from the plot. Kant Pan's editing moves the changes of direction along briskly, but it cannot make every turn feel natural. We would gladly surrender some of that clever construction for more of Davidson and Rea together. The actors keep giving us a reason to return when the plotting has distracted us.

The unpolished quality of Davidson's work can be noticeable alongside experienced co-stars, and we would not claim that inexperience is itself a virtue. What matters is the dignity Dil retains through the romantic material, which Davidson never allows to become a general appeal for pity. That is enough to make this short screen career worth considering on its own terms. Start with The Crying Game, with the caveat that Jordan sometimes makes his actors wait while he arranges another surprise.

Biography

Jaye Davidson (born Alfred Amey) is an English model, fashion stylist and retired actor. He made his screen debut as Dil in Neil Jordan's The Crying Game (1992), a role for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Davidson was born on 21 March 1968 in Riverside, California, and moved with his family to England at the age of two and a half; he grew up in Hertfordshire. With no prior acting experience, he was discovered at a wrap party for Derek Jarman's Edward II (1991) and cast in The Crying Game. He next appeared as Ra in Roland Emmerich's Stargate (1994). He subsequently retired from acting, citing a dislike of the attendant fame, and returned to work in fashion and modelling.
