Fi1m perspective

Jennifer Lawrence makes determination look like hard work and is willing to surrender her dignity for a laugh. We rate her highly, even when the writing gives her fewer complications than she knows how to play.

Jennifer Lawrence listens as though missing a word could cost her. In Debra Granik's Winter's Bone (2010), her Ree Dolly stays composed, but the concentration in her face makes that composure look exhausting. We felt anxious watching her listen to John Hawkes's hard-to-read Teardrop, because she seemed unable to afford a mistake. The screenplay makes Ree's resourcefulness too dependable, but Lawrence lets us see the effort it takes.

Winter's Bone was the breakthrough, followed by international stardom as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games (2012). Three films with David O. Russell included Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and American Hustle (2013). Silver Linings Playbook gave her room for ensemble comedy, away from Ree's wary exchanges.

In No Hard Feelings (2023), Maddie Barker's attempts at seduction are conspicuously clumsy. Lawrence plays her anger as sincere and her come-on as a badly managed performance, which is where much of the comedy comes from. She commits to falling, being dragged and being thrown without trying to preserve Maddie's dignity. The script keeps retreating from its own raunchiness, and her commitment cannot make it a bolder film.

Lynne Ramsay lets her become much harder to contain in Die My Love (2025). As Grace, Lawrence can be funny, frightening and funny again without asking for sympathy. When she moves through long grass on all fours with a kitchen knife, Seamus McGarvey holds the shot in low gold light; Lawrence supplies the threat through movement. Ramsay's second hour repeats too much, and the film keeps us outside Grace's head, but the performance remains a reason to watch.

She can make anger funny without making it harmless. Start with Winter's Bone, then try Die My Love if you can forgive the repetition.
