Fi1m perspective

Josh Hutcherson makes decency convincing by allowing it to look tired and uncertain. We value his quiet work with other actors, even when the writing gives him little to work with.

In Five Nights at Freddy's (2023), Josh Hutcherson’s Mike takes his time to speak and is quick to apologise. Hutcherson makes him look as though a proper night’s sleep would be an unreasonable request. We felt for Mike because the warmth of his scenes with his sister Abby, played by Piper Rubio, gives us something to care about beyond his bad dreams. Emma Tammi’s film is poor horror, but these two actors briefly make its people worth the trouble.

That capacity for vulnerability was already evident in Bridge to Terabithia (2007), with assured ensemble work following in The Kids Are All Right (2010). He brought humour and hurt to Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games films (2012–2015), the role that made him widely known. His sensitivity was part of the attraction. A quieter stretch followed, taking in independent films and television, including Future Man (2017–2020). The return to larger commercial films has also given him a chance to be less agreeable.

In David Ayer’s The Beekeeper (2024), his Derek Danforth is a jittery, spoilt call-centre owner. The jitteriness is the useful detail: this rich boy cannot even seem at ease with his own advantages. Kelli Jones puts him in conspicuously loud shirts, a good costume choice for someone so thoroughly lacking in restraint. We would not recommend this blunt, over-explained revenge thriller for subtlety, but Hutcherson’s fretful nastiness is a welcome change from his more earnest parts.

I Love LA (2025) puts him among people who make being reasonable look like a full-time occupation. As Dylan, he seems to have a morning to prepare for while Rachel Sennott’s Maia calculates the uses of everyone around her. His steadiness suits a comedy that improves when it stops straining to satirise ambition and lets its friendships matter. It is good ensemble work, though Sennott and Odessa A’zion together provide the series’ strongest scenes.

The reservation is about how much a film can ask of that steadiness. Five Nights at Freddy's leaves him sustaining our interest in Mike while the horror fails to get going. Hutcherson cannot supply the missing scares, and we would like more of his roles to demand something beyond making weak writing bearable. Try I Love LA for the company, allowing its noisy opening time to settle.
