Fi1m perspective

Jeremy Allen White makes a man's attempts to stay calm or seem happy worth watching. We rate his patient, physically precise acting, though the films have been less consistently rewarding than The Bear.

In Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (2025), Jeremy Allen White sits with his shoulders up round his ears and sings quietly into a cassette recorder. He is quietly convincing as Bruce Springsteen, though Scott Cooper's cautious film does too little with him away from the recording sessions. Editor Pamela Martin lets a song run to its end, while cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi's lamplit rooms and production designer Stefania Cella's sparse furnishings give us little to watch but White and the machine. Composer Jeremiah Fraites mostly leaves the singing alone; White performs the songs himself, at the small scale the scenes need.

His breakthrough came as Lip Gallagher in Shameless (2011–2021), before he took the lead as Carmy Berzatto in The Bear (2022). That remains our strongest recommendation, with a warning about the exhausting kitchen friction. White gives Carmy's distress enough individual weight to keep the noise from drowning him out. Ayo Edebiri's Sydney and Ebon Moss-Bachrach's Richie matter just as much: he works best here as one person among several who need our attention.

Sean Durkin's The Iron Claw (2023) casts him as Kerry Von Erich, a wrestler working hard at being happy. White's wrestling preparation matters, but the more interesting effort is the one Kerry makes to seem content. We were moved by that effort when the brothers sat together on a bed too small for them. Alongside Zac Efron, Harris Dickinson and Stanley Simons, White helps make their ordinary time together worth watching. Durkin hurries through too much elsewhere; the brothers would have justified a longer stay.

These roles do keep asking White to hold unhappiness just below the surface, and we would like to see him given more room for ease or foolishness. His voice work as the young Hutt Rotta in The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) offers a change without making much of it. Rotta has plenty of volume and little else to hold our attention. Start with The Bear, provided an evening of other people's workplace stress sounds tolerable.
