Jim Carrey can make the effort of pulling a face as funny as the joke itself. We rate his physical comedy highly, though a restrained partner often helps more than another minute of freedom.
Fi1m perspective
In Dumb and Dumber (1994), Jim Carrey's Lloyd Christmas keeps pushing a facial expression after most actors would have let it go. Sometimes the extra effort is the joke; sometimes it is what wears the joke out. We rate Carrey highly as a physical comedian, especially when someone beside him knows how little they need to do. We laughed at Lloyd's stretched reactions, then felt slightly foolish for finding so much pleasure in a man pulling faces. Peter Farrelly lets him go on too long, but there is pleasure in watching an actor commit so completely to being daft.
That willingness helped make 1994 his breakthrough year, with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. His rubbery face and exaggerated movements suit cartoonish characters, though Dumb and Dumber benefits just as much from Jeff Daniels's restraint. His Harry Dunne delivers stupidity calmly, without hinting that he is secretly cleverer than Lloyd. Carrey can strain for a laugh while Daniels gives him a quiet answer, and the contrast makes the exertion funnier. Their timing keeps a comedy with too many repeated jokes worth the evening.
The move towards drama brought The Truman Show (1998) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), with performances that made more room for vulnerability. We have no wish to treat the broad comedies as an embarrassing apprenticeship. In Jeff Fowler's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), he plays both the sulking Ivo Robotnik and the stooped, self-satisfied Gerald Robotnik.
Their interruptions and insults give him a double act he can supply on his own. Fowler allows him enough freedom to make the detours welcome, although the surrounding family film is too loud and its attempts at grief do not convince. Start with Dumb and Dumber, provided the bodily-function jokes are not a deal-breaker.
