Fi1m perspective

Joanna Natasegara produces documentaries that make difficult subjects approachable through the people living them. We recommend Virunga, but The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable gives its engaging narrator too little challenge.

In Virunga (2014), people protecting a park give the documentary its urgency. Joanna Natasegara produced Orlando von Einsiedel’s film, and we rate it highly, with a reservation about how hard its thriller-like pace pushes our anxiety. We found it distressing because the rangers and gorillas receive enough attention to make us care about their safety. That ability to bring us close to a subject is central to the documentaries she produces.

Her early producing and co-directing work included The Price of Kings (2012), before Virunga became her breakthrough. The partnership with von Einsiedel continued with the short The White Helmets (2016) and the more personal Evelyn (2018). She also produced Petra Costa’s The Edge of Democracy (2019), another project built around a director’s personal perspective. These collaborations suggest a producer interested in helping filmmakers stay close to difficult material. Her work as an impact producer on Virunga extended to a campaign against oil exploration, so her involvement went beyond getting the film made.

The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable (2026), her feature directing debut, offers a different test of that closeness. Its subject, a Wu-Tang album produced in a single copy, scarcely needs selling, and Cilvaringz is an engaging guide. Natasegara gets us interested in his account but does too little to test it. RZA appears, yet key members of the group are absent, leaving too few competing perspectives. The later stretches also become less clear, just when the film needs to help us judge what we have been told.

A producer’s contribution is harder to isolate than a director’s, and we should not assign Natasegara every effective decision in Virunga. Her collaboration with von Einsiedel is where we have the clearest evidence of work worth recommending. In The Disciple, the problem is not that she has turned to a music-business story; it is that access to a good speaker has been allowed to stand in for enough questioning. Start with Virunga; reserve The Disciple for an existing interest in Wu-Tang.
