Fi1m perspective

Joaquin Phoenix makes discomfort visible in a raised shoulder or a voice pitched too high. We value his attention to awkward, frightened men, though he sometimes finds a manner and stays there.

Phoenix holds his shoulders up and his mouth slightly open in Beau Is Afraid (2023), as though even standing still requires an apology. As Beau Wassermann, he finds a different flinch for each fresh threat, and we think the precision is remarkable. Cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski’s flat, bright images and production designer Fiona Crombie’s threatening street give him good reasons to shrink from his surroundings. Ari Aster lets the film run long after its strongest hour, but Phoenix keeps finding small changes in a part that offers him few.

His breakthrough came as Commodus in Gladiator (2000). His work with Paul Thomas Anderson on The Master (2012) confirmed how well he suits raw, unsettled performances. The gentler Theodore Twombly in Her (2013) is a useful corrective to the idea that intensity is all he offers. Vulnerability need not arrive with a twitch, and we would welcome more parts that let him work quietly.

Aster uses him particularly well in Eddington (2025), even though the film outstays its welcome. His sheriff, Joe Cross, has a hat too big for him and a voice pitched slightly higher than he would like. Beside Pedro Pascal’s smoother Ted Garcia, Phoenix makes Joe’s discomfort funny without reducing him to a fool. He gives us someone worth following, which makes the film’s loss of focus after its first hour more frustrating.

The limit is Napoleon (2023). Ridley Scott gets a funny, mumbling Emperor who eats with his fingers and spoils the grandeur, but Phoenix scarcely changes as the story moves through his life. The script rushes him along, and his performance offers little sense of a man ageing or hardening. We can enjoy the oddness from scene to scene without believing that it is enough to hold this film together.

For the quieter alternative, there are the music therapy scenes in Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie à Deux (2024). We were moved by the small hope returning to Arthur Fleck’s face when Lady Gaga’s Lee sings back to him across the circle. Phoenix sings cracked and slightly under the note, giving Arthur a reason to struggle with a song rather than treating it as an opportunity to impress. Be prepared for a courtroom drama that makes poor use of him.
