John Early plays people who lie for attention and are furious when it is not paid, and plays them so exactly that we keep watching after we have stopped liking them. Search Party is still the best use of him.
Fi1m perspective
Watch Elliott Goss tell a lie. In Search Party (2016) John Early's Elliott says something untrue, waits to see whether anyone has noticed, and then, if they have, corrects himself with the air of a man doing everyone a favour. Our review said he gets more out of that pause than most comedians get out of a set piece, and we stand by it. Matthew Simonelli dresses him in clothes that fit too well to be comfortable, and Early wears them as if he knows. We laughed at Elliott a great deal, and the thing we remember is not a joke but the fury, small and fast, when nobody was paying attention, because Early plays it straight and it is not funny at all.
He came to it from stand-up, sketches and variety after training in New York, with television guest spots along the way, 30 Rock (2012) among them. Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers wrote Elliott for him, and he played the part across the series' run from 2016 to 2022, through seasons that our review found grew broader as they went. Around it he took supporting parts in Neighbors 2, The Disaster Artist and Late Night, voice work on Bob's Burgers and Archer, and sketches with Kate Berlant, his most frequent partner. None of those gives him a part the size of Elliott.
The character he keeps returning to is a self-absorbed young man of comfortable means who performs a version of himself for anyone who will look. Early has a name for it: "I’ve always had this bourgeois clown that I do, that for whatever reason I’m hyper-fixated on." It is a real creation and it is also a narrow one, and he knows it. Stress Positions (2024), directed by Theda Hammel, gives him a lead in Terry Goon, a part in which the clown is meant to be taken apart; his solo special Now More Than Ever (2023) puts the singing and dancing from the sketches on a stage; Maddie's Secret (2025) is his first film as director, with Early himself as a food influencer. We have not reviewed them. In Coyote vs. Acme (2026), which we liked, he plays Henry Heslop in a supporting part our review did not find room to mention, which tells you something about the size of the part.
Start with the first season of Search Party, where the part and the actor were made for each other. Whether he can be as exact about people who are not lying for attention is the question the recent work is asking, and we would like to see the answer in something we can review. Directing himself as an influencer is at least a way of keeping the clown employed while he decides.
