Judy Greer is too often asked to explain the plot or worry about the lead. We value the warmth and comic timing she brings to those jobs, and wish more films would give her something larger to do.
Fi1m perspective
Before dawn in The Long Walk (2025), Judy Greer drops Cooper Hoffman's Raymond Garraty at a roadside for a contest she cannot stop him entering. As his mother, Mrs Ginnie Garraty, she does not want him to go, but he has volunteered. We were moved by her helplessness, because the simple act of bringing him there makes her part of something she wishes were not happening. Francis Lawrence's film is carried by Hoffman and David Jonsson, and we would not pretend Greer has equal space. She makes the mother's position matter in the time available.
The supporting parts have long been the pattern, though the work has not all been alike. In David O. Russell's Three Kings (1999), she plays Cathy Daitch in an ensemble whose performances we recommend, with reservations about the film's eagerness to forgive its soldiers. In Jawbreaker (1999), she plays Fern Mayo and her glamorous alter ego, Vylette. Then 13 Going on 30 (2004) puts her comic timing to work as the sharp-tongued Lucy Wyman. The best-friend parts became familiar enough to threaten to define her.
The dramatic supporting role of Julie Speer in The Descendants (2011) matters because she could make that limited time carry some emotional weight. By Jurassic World (2015) and Ant-Man (2015), larger franchises were finding room for her without making her the lead. Recurring work on Arrested Development and voicing Cheryl Tunt in Archer widen the picture beyond the film sidekick. We like the comic timing and warmth, but neither can give a supporting character scenes that have not been written. Being useful in so many kinds of production has not reliably brought her larger parts.
Her brief part in The Long Walk also benefits from a film that is plain about the danger. The boys must maintain their walking pace; after three warnings, the soldiers shoot them where they stand. Greer's worry has something specific and terrible behind it, and she makes us feel the mother's inability to intervene. We would welcome larger parts, but this is a small one with a reason to be there. Start there for her dramatic work, with fair warning that the film is hard to sit through.
