Biography

Kay Walsh (born Kathleen Walsh) was an English actress, dancer and screenwriter. She began her career as a dancer in West End music halls and made her film debut in 1934. She appeared in numerous quota quickies before gaining wider recognition in the 1940s.

Walsh met film editor David Lean in 1936; they married in 1940 and divorced in 1949. She appeared in Lean's In Which We Serve (1942) and This Happy Breed (1944), and contributed dialogue to the 1938 film of Pygmalion. She received a writing credit on Lean's Great Expectations (1946) for devising the closing sequence, and devised the opening sequence of his Oliver Twist (1948), in which she played Nancy.

Walsh continued as a character actress through the 1950s and 1960s in films including Stage Fright (1950), Tunes of Glory (1960) and Scrooge (1970). She was married for a time to psychoanalyst Elliott Jaques.
