Kristen Stewart can tell us how stuck a character feels simply by the way she stands. We rate her watchful, restrained acting, though it needs direction that keeps quietness from becoming hard to read.
Fi1m perspective
Kristen Stewart's Lou clears a blocked toilet when we first meet her in Love Lies Bleeding (2024). The mullet, the cigarette and the posture suggest someone who has stayed in her home town too long. It is an unglamorous entrance, and Stewart does not soften it. We rate her most when that restraint lets us see what a character wants, and here the attraction to Katy O'Brian's Jackie is clear.
The early work took her from David Fincher's Panic Room (2002) to Sean Penn's Into the Wild (2007), where she played Tracy Tatro. We liked Penn's film for its moving journey and supporting cast, though his indulgence towards its hero needed curbing. Bella Swan in the Twilight films (2008–2012) made Stewart internationally famous and also brought the familiar complaints that she looked wooden or sullen. Those complaints point to a real risk in her approach: keeping a character's feelings quiet can leave us struggling to read them.
The shift towards independent and arthouse films brought collaborations with Olivier Assayas and Pablo Larraín. The restrained performance in Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) and the psychological detail of her Diana in Spencer (2021) suggest how much she can convey without a large gesture. These parts suit an actor whose first instinct is to watch rather than announce herself. A director still has to make those quiet reactions clear enough for us to follow.
Rose Glass gives her that in Love Lies Bleeding, where Lou's worn-down manner sits beside Jackie's open, hopeful belief that hard work will be rewarded. Their romance kept us interested, even as the film grew bigger and louder. We were unnerved by the swelling muscle after Lou supplies steroids, because Ben Fordesman's close camera makes the bodily change feel horribly plausible. Stewart's restraint is useful amid this noise, though it cannot stop the enlarging spectacle becoming less interesting. Start with Love Lies Bleeding, if a romance with steroids and gunfire sounds like an agreeable evening.
