Fi1m perspective

LaKeith Stanfield is good at playing people who do not make their hurt easy to read. We rate his quietness and peculiar humour, and wish more of his films trusted him to hold our attention without interruption.

In Haunted Mansion (2023), LaKeith Stanfield explains a camera to Rosario Dawson’s Gabbie without lifting his tired, flat voice. We were moved because he left the feeling in the words rather than announcing it with a change of tone. As Ben Matthias, a widower hired to photograph a haunted house, he sounds as though being asked to explain anything is an imposition. That reluctance gives a film crowded with explanations someone worth listening to.

In his feature debut, Short Term 12 (2013), his Marcus resists the sweet, grateful manner that dramas about young people in care can encourage. He also gives Brie Larson’s Grace someone substantial to respond to, so she cannot dominate every encounter. Director Destin Daniel Cretton lets the residents and staff be funny without making their pain the joke. The script sometimes arranges their suffering too neatly, but the acting gives us reason to stay.

His work then found a natural home in stranger comedy, particularly as Darius in Donald Glover’s Atlanta (2016–2022). Jordan Peele’s Get Out (2017) brought him wider notice, while Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You (2018) put him at the centre of a surreal satire as Cassius Green. The unpredictable humour suits him. But reducing his appeal to eccentricity misses the vulnerability that makes it worth paying attention when he stops being funny.

Haunted Mansion shows what happens when a film gives that quieter acting too little room. Justin Simien gets a properly weary performance from him, but Phillip J. Bartell’s editing keeps repeating the same sequence of room, ghost, explanation and joke. Stanfield can give the exposition a reluctant human voice; he cannot make it stop arriving. It is a good performance in a middling film, and we would not send anyone to it just for him.

Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love (2025) uses him as Karl, the stranger on a motorbike who catches Grace’s attention. The casting makes sense for an actor whose appeal includes making us wonder what someone is thinking. Start with Short Term 12 if the eccentric parts are all that come to mind.
