Fi1m perspective

Laura Carmichael made her name as Lady Edith, the Crawley sister who starts out overshadowed and slowly stops being. It is careful ensemble work rather than the kind we single out, and her more interesting choices have come away from the house.

Lady Edith Crawley is the sister at the dinner table whose news nobody asks after. Across six series of Downton Abbey (2010–2015) and three films after it, Carmichael played her as the overshadowed one, and the job was to let the character find her feet so gradually that you only notice afterwards how far she has travelled. It is patient, unglamorous work, done in rooms where somebody else is usually saying the line everyone will repeat. It is also the reason most people know her name.

The career divides around the house. Before it there was Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, a 2007 graduation, fringe theatre and odd jobs. Then came Julian Fellowes, with whom she has now worked nine times, and a part she has said was "much more fun" than the "wet, ingénue parts" she was handed at drama school. The film work alongside it has been mostly small parts in large ensembles: Sal in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Muriel Williams in A United Kingdom (2016). The leads have come on television, in Marcella (2016), The Spanish Princess (2019–2020) and The Secrets She Keeps (2020–2022), where as Agatha Fyfle she was asked to hold a psychological thriller rather than a teacup. She has kept up the stage as well, with Uncle Vanya (2012) and Private Lives (2023) in the West End.

We should be honest about our own record. We have reviewed Downton Abbey twice, the series and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025), and both times we wrote about the cast without stopping on her. Of the series we said the cast never lets it down, and she is part of that. Of the finale we said Michelle Dockery carries what weight there is, and we stand by it; we were faintly sorry, when the lights came up, to realise we had spent the whole film watching Dockery when Edith had been in most of the same rooms. That is not a complaint about Carmichael so much as a description of the part. Edith is written to be looked past, and Carmichael has never once played against the writing to make sure we look.

The period casting has followed her, as it tends to follow anyone who has spent that long in a corset, and the reputation that goes with it is quietly positive and almost without dissent, which is its own kind of limit. Nobody has had reason to argue about her yet. The Secrets She Keeps is the one to try if you know her only as the middle Crawley, and the one we will be watching for more of. Now the doors at Downton have closed, the interesting question is whether she goes on being the person everyone else at the table forgets, or finds a director who will not let it.
