Fi1m perspective

M. Emmet Walsh made dubious officials and lowlifes believable with a gravelly voice and an unhurried drawl. We value his skill at moving a story along without crowding its leading actors, though the repeated sleaziness could become predictable.

Put M. Emmet Walsh in charge of explaining the job and we begin to distrust the employer. As Bryant, the cynical police captain recruiting Deckard in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982), he makes an unpleasant man in authority believable. We found him unsettling because the gravelly drawl makes that cynicism sound ordinary, rather than something he needs to announce. The detective story is thin, but Walsh makes the man setting it in motion worth attending to.

The gullible sportswriter Dickie Dunn in Slap Shot (1977) came before the corrupt parole officer Earl Frank in Straight Time (1978). The latter prompted Joel and Ethan Coen to write Blood Simple (1984) for him, giving an actor accustomed to supporting roles a lead part as private detective Loren Visser. Visser is repellent without becoming a cardboard villain, and the extra room suits Walsh. He makes the character compelling without asking us to find him decent.

Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant (1999) finds another use for that gravelly voice, casting Walsh as Earl Stutz. The film’s boy-and-robot friendship is funny and tender, and Bird takes his young audience seriously. Walsh’s vocal roughness sits comfortably in that gentler story; menace was never the only use for so recognisable a sound. The adults are sometimes too neatly drawn, and a distinctive voice can only do so much about that.

Walsh’s late appearance as Mr Proofroc in Knives Out (2019) continued a career spent largely in supporting parts. He could make those parts credible and get the story moving without demanding that the lead stand aside. The drawback was repetition: casting him as another dubious official could let familiarity do too much of the work. We value the skill, but some of those roles asked for little beyond the familiar unpleasantness. For a reminder of what he could do with the business of explaining things, watch Bryant in Blade Runner.
