Fi1m perspective

Malik Yoba is the one on screen who knows it could go wrong. From the bobsledder with Buckingham Palace in his pocket to thirty years of detectives, he plays steadiness as a choice, and he has usually been handed less than he can carry.

Four Jamaicans climb into a bobsled in Cool Runnings (1993). Three of them are funny about it. The fourth, Malik Yoba's Yul Brenner, keeps a picture of Buckingham Palace in his pocket and is the only one who appears to know the sled can hurt. That is the Yoba note, and it was there from the start: the man who takes the enterprise seriously while everyone around him is playing it for laughs. We laughed at the sled, as the film means us to, and then found the picture in the pocket had got to us, because Yoba plays the wanting straight and never once asks for the joke.

He got the part at an open call, with no agent and no headshot, and the next year he was Detective J.C. Williams in New York Undercover (1994–1999), the first network police drama to put two actors of colour in the lead roles. He was in every episode, through all the changes behind the camera. That series fixed the pattern. There followed a detective in Cop Land (1997), Gavin in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? (2007), Vernon Turner in Empire (2015), and parts in Alphas, Revolution and Designated Survivor. Count the badges and the captains and you have most of a career.

What he brings to them is preparation you can see. He has talked about building Martin Luther King Jr. in Betty & Coretta (2013) out of interviews rather than speeches, and about acting as "dropping into the truth", and the specific, unshowy detail on Cop Land was the kind that Robert De Niro, watching across the set, is said to have approved of. The complaint, and it is a mild one, is that these are supporting parts in crowded rooms, and a man cast to be reliable is the first man the camera stops noticing. We felt that ourselves in The Good Nurse (2022). We came out with a good deal to say about Jessica Chastain and nothing at all about Yoba's Sam Johnson, which is not a mark against him so much as the problem in miniature. He had done the job. Nobody had written him anything to do it with.

He has said for years that the aim is producing, directing and ownership rather than waiting to be hired, and on this evidence that is sensible. What we would still like is for someone to hand him the part Yul Brenner hinted at: the one who wants it more than anybody and says least about it. Until then he will go on being the detective you believe, which is not nothing and is not enough.
