Fi1m perspective

Marion Cotillard commits her voice and body to a character, and can make strength and vulnerability equally convincing. We rate her highly, though supporting roles do not always give her enough to do.

In Contagion (2011), Marion Cotillard's Leonora Orantes flies to Hong Kong to find the first case. It is a promising job for an actor, but Steven Soderbergh gives her strand too little time to make it count. We recommend his cold, quick account of how a virus travels, while finding the treatment of her character one of its weaknesses. Cotillard's presence is a reason to take an interest in a film, but we have learnt not to assume that the script will reward it.

Her breakthrough in Taxi (1998) was followed by international recognition as Édith Piaf in La Vie en Rose (2007), a part requiring physical and vocal transformation. Since then, she has moved between Hollywood and European productions rather than settled into one kind of film. Christopher Nolan's Inception (2010) sits alongside Jacques Audiard's Rust and Bone (2012) and the Dardenne brothers' Two Days, One Night (2014). We value the commitment to changing how she sounds and carries herself. Just as important is her ability to make a character seem forceful and vulnerable at once.

Lee (2024) offers a dispiriting example of how little a film can ask of her. As Solange D'Ayen, she is among the French friends given a picnic, a few reunions and little else; Noémie Merlant and Alexander Skarsgård are similarly short of material. We were frustrated by those scant appearances, because the film keeps explaining its subject while leaving these people barely developed. Kate Winslet's fierce, funny central performance gives us a reason to watch, but the supporting cast makes the unevenness of the writing harder to ignore.

The scripts need to give her more to work with. Asking for a conspicuous performance in an underwritten role would hardly solve the problem. We rate her ability to commit herself physically without reducing a character to the transformation, and want films that allow that work to continue beyond an introduction. For a fuller encounter, start with her leading performance in Audiard's Rust and Bone.
