Fi1m perspective

Mark Rolston makes a cold stare useful: his villains and officers need little introduction. We rate his directness in supporting parts, while wishing more of those parts asked him to do something beyond threaten or enforce.

Mark Rolston’s cold stare makes a supporting character’s presence felt quickly. It suits the villains and officers he is so often asked to play, giving an encounter some tension before much has been explained. We value that directness: he can make a small part matter without asking us to find the man sympathetic. The risk is that we recognise the threat so readily that the character has little left to show us.

His film debut was as Private Drake in James Cameron’s Aliens (1986), a useful setting for an actor who registers quickly within a group. It remains a film we recommend strongly, though some of its marines are little more than types. Sigourney Weaver gives the military spectacle its human centre; Rolston has the narrower job of making one of those soldiers count. Supporting work in Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) continued a career in which he would repeatedly be part of the company rather than its leading attraction.

In Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption (1994), that menace has a more troubling use. As prison-gang leader Bogs Diamond, Rolston supplies a reason to fear the men inside, even in a drama inclined to make prison life too tidy. We were frightened by Bogs because the threat from this fellow inmate feels credible, not merely announced. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman earn the film’s warmth, and Rolston helps stop us forgetting what sort of place their friendship has to survive.

The later work keeps him in supporting parts, including Agent Russ in Rush Hour (1998) and Delahunt in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (2006). As FBI agent Dan Erickson in Saw V (2008), he is again working with the authority-figure casting that recurs across his films and television. His voice work includes Lex Luthor in Young Justice, so the stare is hardly his only resource. That consistency is useful, although it leaves us wishing for parts that depend less on immediate menace and give him more to do. We would begin with Aliens and The Shawshank Redemption, with fair warning that the latter offers little opportunity to enjoy his company.
