Fi1m perspective

Michael Wincott’s deep, rasping voice makes him easy to cast as a villain. We value the intelligence and restraint he brings to the threat, though too many of his parts ask for much the same thing.

Wincott’s voice is deep, rasping and well suited to a threat delivered without shouting. The interest lies in the intelligence he gives the man doing the threatening: we get the sense that he has thought about what he wants. We found his Top Dollar in The Crow (1994) unsettling because the menace comes with enough charm to keep us listening. It is a persuasive use of his gifts, though the frequent villain casting has made his arrival in a film rather predictable.

His Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) brought wider recognition and helped establish that pattern. We like the supporting cast more than the film’s attempts to accommodate both Kevin Costner’s solemnity and Alan Rickman’s mischief. The adventure has its pleasures, but 143 minutes give its competing approaches too long to get in each other’s way. Wincott is one reason to persist, without making this the obvious place to begin with his work.

We prefer Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man (1995), with Wincott as Conway Twill. This Western is funny and unsettling, with Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer supplying warmth on a frontier that offers little welcome to a fragile accountant. Wincott’s distinctive presence fits a film willing to be strange, although our recommendation rests on the whole cast rather than on his part alone. The long pauses sometimes exhaust our patience, but Jarmusch gives these supporting players a more interesting film to inhabit.

The understated threat he brings to Gary Soneji in Along Came a Spider (2001) continues the villainous work. Jordan Peele’s Nope (2022), with Wincott as Antlers Holst, is a later reminder that he remains useful in character parts. We would still choose by the film, without expecting that voice to justify an evening on its own. Start with Dead Man, but allow for those pauses.
