Fi1m perspective

Michelle Monaghan has comic timing and a practical commitment to a part, but too many films give her little to do. We rate the actor; the recurring jobs as a partner or a supplier of information deserve more scepticism.

Michelle Monaghan's Detective Williams turns up with Bobby Cannavale's Detective Torres, exchanges a page of dialogue and leaves. In MaXXXine (2024), Ti West's script makes this a repeated duty after each body. We were frustrated by those visits because neither actor gets much to do beyond passing on information. The film has hired performers it barely uses. Monaghan deserves better material, though this part gives us little chance to say how much better she might be.

Her early credits include Kim in Paul Greengrass's The Bourne Supremacy (2004), a film we recommend for its tense pursuit and Matt Damon's troubled hero. The breakthrough came with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), playing Harmony Faith Lane alongside Robert Downey Jr. Her comic timing helped establish her there, and comedy is worth remembering when looking at the parts that followed. Mission: Impossible III (2006) brought Julia Meade opposite Tom Cruise and the beginning of a recurring role in the series. It also fits a familiar pattern in her casting: wife or romantic partner to the male lead.

Trucker (2008) offers a more concrete example of how seriously she takes the work: she learnt to drive an eighteen-wheeler for the role. We respect the willingness to acquire a difficult skill that a part actually needs. Her independent dramas have also given her stronger, more self-sufficient women to play. That is the direction we would like to see her taken more often, with a character whose purpose extends beyond her relationship to the leading man.

The useful distinction is between a film worth seeing and a film worth seeing for her. The Bourne Supremacy belongs securely in the first group; MaXXXine gives us too little of either. We are interested in what happens when a script trusts her with comedy or with a life beyond the leading man. Start with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang; the routine police enquiries can wait.
