Fi1m perspective

Moritz Bleibtreu makes volatile men engaging company, and we value his ability to matter without dominating a film. Run Lola Run uses that quality well; his broader playing elsewhere can push a character towards caricature.

In Run Lola Run (1998), Moritz Bleibtreu is the man Franka Potente needs to reach. Tom Tykwer gives Lola and Manni little time to establish themselves as a couple, but their relationship is credible enough to make the running matter. We were anxious for Lola: Potente made reaching Bleibtreu’s Manni feel urgent, despite all the editing tricks. The credit there belongs chiefly to her, and there is no need to pretend otherwise. Bleibtreu helps make a quickly sketched relationship sufficient for a whole thriller.

His breakthrough came as the gangster Abdul in Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (1997), with Run Lola Run bringing international attention the following year. The physically demanding role of prisoner Tarek Fahd in Das Experiment (2001) made further use of his intensity. In Soul Kitchen (2009), he plays Ilias Kazantsakis for regular collaborator Fatih Akin, working within a comedy-drama ensemble. The comedy matters: forcefulness would become tiring if it were all he offered, and these parts give us a reason to look beyond the gangsters and rebels.

His career has settled into German leads, international supporting parts and recurring work with Akin and Oskar Roehler. We like that willingness to take supporting parts as well as leads, though his performances are not uniformly persuasive. In broader historical and comic parts, with Jew Suss: Rise and Fall (2010) a caution, his energy can tip into caricature. His directorial debut, Cortex (2020), is a further turn, but it is the actor we would start with.

Run Lola Run remains our recommendation because it keeps the scale of his contribution clear. Potente carries the film; Bleibtreu does not need to compete with her for the relationship to work. The cutting and techno score supply much of the excitement, and the thoughts about chance are thinner than the film seems to realise. Choose it for the pace and for the couple, and let the theories about chance look after themselves.
