Fi1m perspective

Natasha Rothwell can make an outrageous remark sound like the most sensible contribution to the conversation. We rate her comic precision highly; the small film parts are less satisfying than the television work that gives her something more to do.

Kelli says something filthy, and Natasha Rothwell makes it sound entirely routine. In Insecure (2016), that plain delivery is the pleasure: she trusts the words without asking us to congratulate her for being outrageous. We laughed at Kelli because Rothwell gives the filth so little fuss. It is precise ensemble acting, and a good reason to begin with this programme rather than her films.

That breakthrough also gave her work beyond playing the outspoken friend: Rothwell contributed as a writer and director. Issa Rae's series, with Prentice Penny as showrunner, makes friendship worth paying attention to, even when the office comedy grows broader than it needs to be. Kelli belongs among these friends rather than feeling like someone brought in whenever a scene needs a joke. Rothwell is funniest when the bluntness seems perfectly reasonable to the woman speaking.

The films have offered less space. In Jeff Fowler's Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), her Rachel, sister to Tika Sumpter's Maddie, gets two scenes and makes both count. The film is forgettable, but there is nothing wrong with her contribution. In Wish (2023), she voices Sakina, but we found the story empty and the songs forgettable. Neither is where we would send someone to understand what she can do.

The more useful change came on television, with Belinda, the mild-mannered spa manager in The White Lotus (2021). Here Rothwell's restraint serves a dramatic supporting role, a useful corrective to the assumption that her job is always to supply the rudest line. That does not make the comedy lesser work. It does suggest how limiting those small comic-relief parts can be.

In How to Die Alone (2024), she plays Mel and takes on the work of co-creator, writer and producer. That is a substantial change from making an impression in two scenes of somebody else's film. Start with Insecure, where there is time to enjoy the company as well as the jokes.
