Fi1m perspective

Neal McDonough gives soldiers and villains a watchful, economical intensity. We value him most in an ensemble, where that restraint has a purpose; repeated casting as the threat can make a useful actor seem narrower than he is.

Neal McDonough does much of his acting while listening. His spare, intent manner suits the soldiers and law-enforcement figures he is often given, and makes him a plausible threat when the casting turns towards villains. We value the restraint, though a succession of such parts can start to look like a limit imposed on the actor.

In Jonathan Frakes's Star Trek: First Contact (1996), he plays Lieutenant Hawk within a crowded supporting cast. We recommend its mixture of tension, warmth and horror, despite the hurried explanations for newcomers. Patrick Stewart gives the film its chief dramatic weight, and Hawk is an early, high-profile opportunity rather than a defining role. There is more room for McDonough in the television work.

Buck Compton in Band of Brothers (2001) was the breakthrough, and remains the better introduction. Damian Lewis anchors the ensemble, but the series earns its ten episodes by attending patiently to the men of Easy Company. We were moved by that patience: the programme makes time for the company beyond its leading man. McDonough's aptitude for soldiers and leaders serves a drama that needs its supporting men to matter. The action and music can overstate things, a reservation that makes his restrained approach all the more welcome.

After Compton came Fletcher in Steven Spielberg's Minority Report (2002), followed by further television work and franchise appearances. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) cast him as Dum Dum Dugan; his television antagonists include Robert Quarles in Justified in 2012 and Damien Darhk in the Arrowverse. The settings change, but these credits help explain why authority and menace have become the familiar expectations.

The reservation is the repeated casting, rather than any lack of commitment across these genres. We would like more parts that make use of his ability to listen without also requiring him to threaten. For an introduction, we would begin with Band of Brothers rather than the catalogue of antagonists.
