Nicola Piovani is an Italian composer of film, television and theatrical scores, as well as contemporary classical and chamber music. Born in Rome on 26 May 1946, he studied piano at the Verdi Conservatory in Milan, graduating in 1967, and later trained in orchestration with the Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis.

He has written scores for more than 190 films since the late 1960s, collaborating with directors including Federico Fellini (Ginger e Fred, 1986; Intervista, 1987; La voce della luna, 1990), Roberto Benigni (Life Is Beautiful, 1997), Nanni Moretti (Caro diario, 1993; The Son's Room, 2001) and the Taviani brothers. His score for Life Is Beautiful won the Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score in 1999 and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2000. Piovani has also composed for stage works and opera, and in 2022 was appointed artistic director of the Gigi Proietti Globe Theatre in Rome.
