Fi1m perspective

Noah Jupe is particularly good at showing boys trying to work out what adults expect of them. We rate his restraint: he makes a character’s uncertainty worth watching without pleading for our sympathy.

In No Sudden Move (2021), Noah Jupe has to judge how brave to be while armed men occupy the family kitchen. Steven Soderbergh keeps the morning light flat and the music off; toast is being made, and school bags wait by the door. We were frightened by how ordinary the kitchen remained while Jupe’s character weighed what was expected of him. His hesitation makes the danger feel close without needing to compete with the men holding the guns.

That is where we rate him most: showing the effort a young person makes to manage feelings in front of adults. His move from television into Suburbicon (2017) and Wonder (2017) led to wider attention with A Quiet Place (2018) and Honey Boy (2019). The latter drew particular notice for his performance, but much of his work has involved playing somebody’s son. Such casting suits his unforced vulnerability, though it also risks asking him to do the same thing repeatedly.

In Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet (2025), he has a short appearance, and casting him is one of the film’s strongest decisions. We would not confuse that with carrying the picture; Jessie Buckley carries the film. Zhao gives the scene time, allowing the performers to hold our attention without so much prompting. It is a welcome change in a film whose middle stretch insists on grief too often, and too prettily.

Lead roles in Franklin and Lady in the Lake mark a move beyond the child parts, though a larger part is not automatically a better use of an actor. We would look for the directors who trust him to leave a feeling unexplained. Soderbergh gets that right even when the story around Jupe eventually becomes too keen on explaining itself. Start with No Sudden Move, and give the kitchen scene your full attention.
