Fi1m perspective

Patrick Wilson makes decent men interesting by showing the strain of staying decent. We rate his patient, unshowy acting more highly than many of the horror sequels built around it, and would welcome more room for his comedy.

In Cape Fear (2026), Patrick Wilson plays Tom Bowden as a decent man who has stopped asking questions. He is good at the small dishonesties of a marriage, and the performance gives an overlong series something worth watching. We rate Wilson most when a respectable man is tired or has decided to stop asking questions. He makes us notice the effort it takes to remain pleasant.

The useful blankness was there in Mike Nichols's Angels in America (2003), where his Joe Pitt is handsome and gives little away. Leading Insidious (2010) and playing Ed Warren in The Conjuring (2013) made him a familiar source of reassurance in horror. He takes the people in danger seriously without insisting we admire him for it. His tired, upright state trooper Lou Solverson in the second season of Fargo (2014) offers a better starting point than the horror sequels. In Bone Tomahawk (2015), his Arthur O'Dwyer is determined, but Wilson makes us feel what that determination costs him.

His partnership with Vera Farmiga gives The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025) warmth it does not always know when to leave alone. Wilson's Ed Warren has a stiff back and resents being told to sit down; Farmiga's Lorraine is tired of what she has seen. We warmed to them in the kitchen because their conversation feels unforced, with no need to hurry towards the next fright. Director Michael Chaves returns to that comfort too often, leaving the family needing their help waiting elsewhere.

Insidious: The Red Door (2023) was his first film as director, and its weaknesses are harder to excuse. As Josh Lambert, he loses the thread of his sentences and gives Ty Simpkins time to make their father-and-son silences uncomfortable. The MRI sequence earns its fright. Elsewhere the care for the family cannot make up for the familiar scares.

James Wan finds a less dutiful use for him in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). Wilson's fastidious Orm and Jason Momoa's undignified Arthur have the makings of a decent comedy, and editor Kirk M. Morri gives their exchanges room to work. The surrounding spectacle is muddled enough to make us wish the brothers had been allowed to keep talking. We would happily watch him play another fastidious fool, preferably in a film that lets him finish a conversation.
