Fi1m perspective

Peggy Lipton brings warmth and unspoken sadness to her quieter roles. We value her most as Norma Jennings in Twin Peaks, where she makes a sensible, sympathetic woman worth watching amid all the strangeness.

Norma Jennings runs the Double R Diner in Twin Peaks (1990), and Peggy Lipton makes her competence quietly reassuring. There is vulnerability there too; she never seems to have been spared disappointment merely because she is kind. We found Norma unexpectedly moving because Lipton lets a little melancholy remain in the warmth. This is the work we recommend her for: a sympathetic supporting performance with enough life of its own to matter among the series’ louder peculiarities.

Her breakthrough came as Julie Barnes in The Mod Squad (1968–1973), one of three hippie undercover police officers, alongside Clarence Williams III and Michael Cole. The youthful countercultural image was important, and Lipton gave the long-running programme a consistent presence. But she was already expressing doubts about what else she could do as an actor in 1972, after years in the role. We would not turn that uncertainty into a verdict against her; a part that makes an actor recognisable can still leave much of what they might do untested.

After a long break from acting, she returned in 1988, before Twin Peaks brought her renewed attention. David Lynch and Mark Frost’s series gave her a useful place within its ensemble: Norma’s steadiness makes its oddness easier to accept. Lipton belongs in these surroundings without having to exaggerate to match them, and we value that restraint. That does not solve the series’ pacing problems; some stretches are too slow, even with people this good to return to.

She reprised Norma in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) and the 2017 revival; occasional later film roles included Ellen March in The Postman (1997). Those credits offer other places to look, but our recommendation rests firmly on the original series. Start there, and give the woman running the diner as much attention as the people behaving more peculiarly.

Biography

Peggy Lipton, also credited as Margaret Ann Lipton, was an American actress and model. Born in New York City on 30 August 1946, she began modelling at age 15 with the Ford Agency before moving into acting. She appeared in several 1960s television series and achieved her breakthrough as Julie Barnes in the crime drama The Mod Squad (1968–1973), earning four Emmy Award nominations and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama.

In 1974 she married music producer Quincy Jones; the couple had two daughters, Kidada and Rashida Jones, before divorcing in 1990.
