Fi1m perspective

Randall Park makes anxious, put-upon characters worth caring about, often with little help from the script. We rate his understated timing and warmth; the louder comedies are not always built to make good use of either.

In Strays (2023), Randall Park makes Hunter's anxiety matter in a film largely occupied with swearing dogs. We were touched by his nervousness because Park takes it seriously enough for us to care, without asking the comedy to stop. Josh Greenbaum's film runs out of jokes well before it runs out of running time. Jamie Foxx supplies most of the best lines as Bug. Park gives the silliness some unexpected tenderness.

His affable straight-man parts make good use of his understated timing, but they need not be the limit. As Louis Huang in Fresh Off the Boat (2015–2020), he had the domestic sitcom setting that suits his comedy. Co-writing and starring in Always Be My Maybe (2019) meant helping shape the material as well as delivering it. His move into directing with Shortcomings (2023) took that further. Those larger opportunities make the thin supporting roles harder to accept.

James Wan's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) is a case in point. As Dr. Shin, the reluctant scientist alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Black Manta, Park is a welcome change from the surrounding aggression. The script gives him almost nothing to do with that reluctance. There is something frustrating about casting an actor who can make unease interesting, then leaving him so little scope to affect a scene.

The Residence (2025), with Park as Edwin Park, offers another crowded setting for his comedy. Uzo Aduba's detective is worth following, but the ensemble too often has performers competing for laughter at the same pitch. We found too little space for the smaller reactions that make a group of comic actors worth watching together. That matters with Park, whose understated timing needs a chance to register without someone else pressing for the next laugh. Try Strays for the voice performance, provided repeated dog jokes are not a deal-breaker.
