Fi1m perspective

Robert Patrick is a persuasive actor of menace and authority, using a fixed stare and precise movement to establish both. We value that discipline, though repeated villain roles have made it too easy to overlook what else he can do.

A fixed stare, a purposeful movement: Patrick can make an encounter uncomfortable before much has happened. As the T-1000 in James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), he makes pursuit look like work requiring concentration. We found him frightening because he seemed so calm about it. The performance is physically exact without asking us to admire the effort.

That breakthrough followed action and science-fiction work in the 1980s, and brought repeated offers for robots and villains. The disadvantage is plain: once his appearance tells us what to expect, a film can stop giving him anything else to play. Fire in the Sky (1993), in which he played Mike Rogers, led to his casting in The X-Files and a useful change of setting.

The X-Files began in 1993; Patrick joined as FBI Special Agent John Doggett for its eighth and ninth series, from 2000 to 2002. We recommend the programme warmly for its absorbing company and unexplained events, while admitting that its secrecy can try the patience. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are central to that pleasure, but Patrick’s no-nonsense manner gives us something worthwhile beyond their pairing. His authority suits the part without needing the automatic menace of another villain. Doggett is a good reason to resist reducing him to the T-1000.

The Laundromat (2019), in which he plays Captain Paris, is a reminder that a useful supporting actor cannot solve the larger problems. Soderbergh and Burns keep taking their Panama Papers film away from Streep’s widow, its most involving character, to spend time with villains addressing the camera. We find too little in it to recommend. Patrick’s presence does not make the film any better at staying with the person whose experience gives us a reason to care.

The move towards recurring and leading television roles makes sense for him. A hard stare can introduce a character in seconds. Spending longer with that character gives Patrick a chance to do something less immediately familiar. We would start with Doggett if the T-1000 is all that comes to mind, provided the programme’s fondness for keeping secrets is part of the attraction.
